In the face of growing disinformation campaigns and targeted foreign interference, Renew Europe has adopted a position paper, containing a series of measures to create a clear European legal framework with robust safeguards and defence mechanisms. The European answer to disinformation needs to be comprehensive, involving all key actors in this joint fight. We must decrease the volume of disinformation campaigns, create legislation to fight disinformation effectively, ensure transparency and a publicly scrutinised role for online platforms. Our goal is to better equip the EU to fight disinformation and strategically protect our democracies against third countries and anti-system actors that seek to divide and weaken us, both now and in the future.

La liberté de pensée et la liberté d’expression sont fondamentales dans les sociétés libres et démocratiques.C’est grâce à ces libertés, et non malgré elles, que les démocraties solides se montrent résilientes. La mésinformation, les fausses informations et la désinformation ne sont pas propres à notre génération. Des démocraties saines peuvent et doivent être armées pour faire face à ces problèmes. Or, durant les périodes d’incertitude, les individus sont plus vulnérables aux récits erronés,mensongers ou complotistes. La désinformation fait planer un risque sur nos sociétés, nos démocraties et nos institutions. Elle est devenue un enjeu encore plus central depuis qu’internet et le microciblage occupent une place ,considérable dans notre vie, et elle pourrait se révéler lourde de conséquences.
