Speaking in a European Parliament debate on European security, Valérie Hayer this morning issued a stark warning about shifting global alliances, urging Europe to take control of its own defense and security.
Highlighting recent actions by the United States under Donald Trump—ranging from supporting a Russian-led UN resolution against Ukraine to halting arms deliveries— Valérie Hayer declared that Europe can no longer rely on traditional alliances for its security:
“Our world is becoming increasingly hostile, and we must draw two conclusions: we must be able to defend ourselves, and we must protect our democratic model,” Hayer stated. “That means investing in European defense, working towards a common loan for military spending, and ensuring our armies can operate together. Without European preference, there is no strategic autonomy—and no sovereignty.”
She also reaffirmed strong support for Ukraine, calling for increased military aid and the potential deployment of European troops for future peacekeeping operations.
“The security of Ukrainians is our security,” Valérie Hayer emphasised. “Trump’s decision to stop arms deliveries only reminds us of one thing: we must take our destiny into our own hands.”
Hayer concluded by calling for strict enforcement of EU laws against foreign interference and urging the European Commission to prioritise the Democratic Shield initiative.
“Europe has all the assets to be a true political and military power. It is time to embrace this role.”
