In light of today's discordant meeting between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington, Valérie Hayer, President of the Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament, strongly condemns the insulting attitude and remarks from US President Donald Trump and his Vice-President JD Vance toward Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the White House today and therefore has called for immediate and decisive European action to support Ukraine, including bold European defense. The meeting, intended to solidify a minerals agreement and discuss peace negotiations, was abruptly terminated by President Trump. President Hayer emphasised that Europe's commitment to Ukraine must remain steadfast. Valérie Hayer said: "Europe stands by the side of Ukraine and President Zelenskyy. Donald Trump might wish to abandon and exploit Ukraine, but Europe will reject this. There can be no lasting peace in Europe without Europeans. President Trump displays not just the end of all respectful, diplomatic attitudes, but the end of all reliability. Trust is heavily damaged with the USA. The world saw tonight, how Trump treats leaders, you are at his mercy or not. Europe can be next if we don't stand up now to act with greater autonomy. Europe stands all the more steadfastly at the side of the Ukrainians. Today and in the future." In response, Renew Europe urges European nations to: • Enhance Defense Capabilities: Initiate a substantial rearmament program to bolster Europe's defense infrastructure. • Establish Robust Security Guarantees: Develop and implement unwavering security assurances for Ukraine to deter further aggression. • Strengthen Diplomatic Engagement: Actively involve Ukrainian representatives in all peace negotiations to ensure their sovereignty and interests are upheld. |
