Renew Europe deeply regrets the senseless decision by President Trump to apply tariffs on EU steel and aluminium. The EU must now stand together and use all relevant instruments at its disposal to respond in an effective and proportionate manner, while seeking cooperation with like - minded democratic allies.
Renew Europe calls on Trump's cheerleaders in Europe, who have played their part in delivering steep increases in taxes to be paid by Europe's businesses, to take responsibility for their role in this pointless trade conflict.
Valérie Hayer, President of Renew Europe, said:
"Europe must show its strength by answering with appropriate countermeasures. President Trump responds to strength, so we must show our teeth. Our products are among the world's finest. Supporting European producers is now more crucial than ever."
"As the US inflicts damage upon itself, we should seize this opportunity to fortify the EU by completing our single market, delivering a capital markets union, and bolstering our competitiveness."
Addressing the role of Trump's European supporters, President Valérie Hayer added:
"Far-right European politicians who campaigned for Mr. Trump must answer for their actions. EU producers and businesses now face increased costs, partly due to their endorsement. These cheerleaders for Trump are directly hurting EU consumers and exporters."
Karin Karlsbro MEP, Vice-Chair of the Parliament’s International Trade Committee and standing rapporteur for EU-US relations, said:
"Trade wars make us all poorer. Instead of division, we should unite against our common threats - Russia and China. To our friends around the world: we are open for business. To the US: we are ready to respond. When the US seeks to divide us, our strength lies in Europe's unity."
