In light of increased Russian attacks against civilians in Ukraine, the Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament has initiated a cross-party statement calling for increased EU and national military support for Ukraine.
In a joint statement, co-signed by four other political groups in the European Parliament, ahead of a meeting of EU leaders foreseen for the 1st February, Renew Europe calls for increased, long-term support that matches the needs of the Ukrainian Army. Renew Europe successfully added a debate on this topic to this week’s plenary session of the European Parliament (Tuesday).
Malik Azmani, Acting President of Renew Europe, said:
“We need to respond to intensified Russian attacks against civilians in Ukraine and give the Ukrainian Army the support it needs. This requires a step change in EU and national military support from member states. The dictators of the world are watching carefully. Ukraine’s security is Europe’s security."
Nathalie Loiseau MEP, Chair of the European Parliament's Subcommittee on Security and Defence, said:
"We need to live up to our commitments and support Ukraine not only as long as it takes but also as much as it takes. Ukraine is the only country bravely fighting Russian aggression. But we are all facing Russian aggressiveness. We cannot allow Russia to win. Supporting Ukraine is our most obvious security guarantee."
