The Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament condemns the attempted coup d'état in Guatemala and calls on the initiators to immediately end these actions.
In a resolution today approved by the plenary, initiated by our political group we call on the competent authorities, including incumbent President Alejandro Giammattei, and the judiciary to take action to preserve the constitutional order and the rule of law, by rejecting the unacceptable attempts to overturn the electoral results.
MEP, Jordi Cañas (Ciudadanos, Spain), Vice-President of Renew Europe and the initiator of the resolution on the attempt of a coup d'état in Guatemala, said:
“Today, this parliament has broadly adopted a resolution supporting democracy in Guatemala. I urge the authorities to engage in an orderly transition leading to the sworn of President-elected Bernardo Arevalo on the 14th of January 2024. The Council needs to speed up the process to immediately adopt targeted restrictive measures against those systematically undermining the 2023 electoral process.”
