A bilateral investment agreement with Taiwan is needed

In a resolution adopted today, the European Parliament calls on the European Commission to strengthen cooperation with Taiwan, in order to boost our economic, trade and investment ties and to go further with a formal bilateral investment agreement that can ensure the diversification of our supply chains.
Renew Europe stands with Taiwan as it continues to face increasing threats from China, particularly since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Taiwan is a like-minded partner and a democratic friend with whom we share fundamental values.
Marie-Pierre Vedrenne (MoDem, France), who negotiated this resolution on behalf of our political group, declared:
‘’To address our dependences, the EU needs to diversify its partnerships. Aligned with our values, Taiwan has expressed eagerness to collaborate with us on energy and environmental transitions. Despite persistent calls for a bilateral investment agreement, a clear response from the European Commission is still pending. This oral question with a resolution presents an opportunity to push for a comprehensive agreement with Taiwan, and to call upon the Commission to outline a clear timetable for upcoming collaborative initiatives.’’
