The Renew Europe group in the European Parliament welcomes today's approval in plenary of a Union certification framework for carbon removals, setting out EU-wide rules for measuring the removal of CO2 from the atmosphere. This framework aims to boost innovative carbon removal technologies, carbon storage in products and sustainable carbon farming solutions.
While Europe's goal of becoming climate neutral primarily requires immediate emissions reductions, both permanent and temporary carbon removals are complementary in achieving the EU's climate goals. Establishing a robust certification framework for CO2 removals ensures that carbon removals are applied responsibly and therefore effectively used across the EU to halt climate disruption.
MEP Emma Wiesner (Centerpartiet, Sweden) explains the importance of the file: “Today, we take a large step towards a climate neutral Europe. With this proposal, we take the first steps to drastically increase the technical carbon sinks as well as to kick- start carbon farming in Europe.”
