Renew Europe welcomes the adoption today in the Committee on Constitutional Affairs (AFCO) of the report on the 14-points presented by the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, to improve our internal rules and increase transparency standards and requirements. During these long months of work, Renew Europe - through its shadow rapporteur Gilles Boyer - has always fought to find a compromise with the pro-European political groups and to implement effective, balanced and ambitious transparency rules. Our group has played a decisive role in ensuring that this text is a strong response to the need for greater transparency in our democracies.
Gilles Boyer (Horizons, France), Renew Europe shadow rapporteur on this file declared:
‘The Qatargate scandal has profoundly undermined citizens’ confidence in our institutions. Providing a political response is both a necessity and a duty. This vote is an important first step, and our Group has played a decisive role by making a difference and enabling the adoption of a text that lives up the challenges posed by Qatargate.’
