Speaking in a debate in the European Parliament to prepare for the European Council meeting of 15 December 2022, Renew Europe President Stéphane Séjourné has called on the EU to pursue quick and innovative decisions to safeguard prosperity and develop Europe’s economic sovereignty;
- A sovereignty fund so that we produce more on our soil.
- A "sovereignty test" to ensure that no EU legislation undermines our objectives.
- A law of sovereignty to free up our businesses and SMEs from unnecessarily complex procedures.
To be able to rise to the challenges the European Union faces, Renew Europe repeats its demand for reform, to end the unanimity requirement in the EU Council for strategic areas, as requested by citizens during the Conference on the Future of Europe.
Stéphane Séjourné, President of the Renew Europe Group, said:
“The last few weeks have also shown that vetoes rot European democratic life. It’s time to end unanimity and move to qualified majority voting. In a changing world, a sovereign Europe is a strong Europe. We must innovate politically to negotiate a "made in Europe" economic turnaround, because the decisions of our American friends and our Chinese adversaries are jeopardising our economic fabric. Europe needs a sovereignty package, including a fund for investment, so that we produce more on our soil, such as clean energy and essential goods.”
