On the initiative of Renew Europe, the European Parliament today debated the need for a European solution on asylum and migration, including search and rescue.
Stéphane Séjourné, President of Renew Europe, speaking in Strasbourg, said:
“The Asylum and Migration Pact is unfortunately the great forgotten item in national debates on asylum and migration. To achieve a European solution, we need reform that combines two principles: solidarity and responsibility. If we as European Parliamentarians can find a way, we can also put political pressure on the European Council and force EU capitals to compromise. We cannot go back to the chaos of 2015.”
Stéphane Séjourné called on the far-right and far-left to take their responsibility:
“We already know that we cannot count on the far right, who are conspicuous by their absence in parliamentary work, gain a benefit from crises and prefer to grandstand about solutions. I also doubt the willingness of our colleagues on the far left to play a collective game. I hope that in Rome, Mrs Meloni will finally tell us what her position is on the text instead of fabricating dramas. It is our duty as co-legislators to get to work and move beyond political polemics!”
