The Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament welcomes today’s adoption in plenary of the Culture and Education Committee report that proposes measures and makes recommendations to fight against offline and online racism and discrimination in culture, education, media and sports.
Our group strongly believes that racism should be addressed in a holistic approach: education is key to promote tolerance, understanding and diversity. The media and cultural sectors should avoid practices that perpetuate or reinforce negative stereotypes about ethnic and racial minorities, and encourage showing them in positive roles. Team sports can be a powerful driver of social inclusion, equality and promotion of EU values in the fight against racism.
MEP Monica SEMEDO (Independent, Luxembourg) Renew Europe shadow rapporteur says:
“Culture, education, media and sports play an important role in the fight against racism. They have the power to change minds. We have to get rid of racist stereotypes, deconstruct prejudices, and represent the full diversity of our society at all levels”.
