The new Climate Law increases the EU’s official 2030 emissions reductions target from 40 percent to a minimum of 55 percent, and thanks to the Parliament and to Renew Europe, the actual agreed net emissions reduction target will be close to 57%. The Climate Law transforms political promises into much needed binding regulations, in order to ensure that the EU becomes climate neutral by 2050 at the latest. After 2050, the EU shall aim to achieve negative emissions.
Renew Europe is particularly proud of having ensured that the Commission from now on is obliged to thoroughly screen the alignment of any future legislative proposal with the EU´s climate targets.
Renew Europe shadow Nils Torvalds (Svenska folkpartiet, FI) says:
"I welcome that the EU has finally reached a common agreement to ensure that we truly achieve the ambitious but necessary goal of climate neutrality by 2050. I am extremely pleased that the carbon budget, which is based on the EU's remaining share of carbon dioxide emissions under the Paris Agreement, is included as a central part of the Climate Law. The carbon budget is needed for industry and companies to be able to make long-term plans, to create stability and encourage to invest."
Pascal Canfin (Liste Renaissance, FR), chair of the Parliament’s ENVI committee, says:
"The European Parliament adopted formally today the European Climate Law. This is the last step that sets our climate objectives in stone. We will do 2.5 times more in 9 years than we have done in the last 10 years. Now, we are going to accelerate the fight against climate change in a considerable way by revising more than 50 European laws, starting with the 13 proposals of the Fit-for-2030 package that will be presented mid-July by the European Commission."
Renew Europe recently also sent a letter to President von der Leyen and Executive Vice President Timmermans, outlining five flagship messages and calling for the Commission to integrate them in the upcoming Fit for 2030 climate package in order to ensure a balanced and successful package delivering on our climate objectives while ensuring a just transition.
