Last Friday, April 23, the parliamentary majority in the Republic of Moldova revoked the mandate of the President of the Constitutional Court, Ms Domnica Manole, thus not recognizing the decision of the Constitutional Court of April 15, 2021 on the conditions for dissolving the Parliament. By this act, the parliamentary majority in the Republic of Moldova directly defied Article 137 of the country's Constitution, which states "judges of the Constitutional Court are irremovable during their term of office, independent and subject only to the Constitution.

Renew Europe strongly disapproves of this attempt to overthrow the constitutional order in the Republic of Moldova and the serious threat to the Rule of Law that such a decision represents.

Dacian Cioloş, President of Renew Europe said:

“The fact that a legislative majority did not recognise the decision of the Constitutional Court of April 15, 2021 on the conditions for the dissolution of the Parliament is deeeply worrying for the European path of the Republic of Moldova",

Dacian Cioloş expressed his trust in the President, Maia Sandu, and offers her all support to ensure that democratic and constitutional mechanisms are upheld in the Republic of Moldova.

"The independence of the Constitutional Court is vital to ensuring the rule of law and democratic mechanisms. Both are fundamental principles that the Republic of Moldova has committed to in the EU-Moldova Association Agreement", concludes Dacian Cioloş.

Hilde Vautmans (Open VLD, Belgium), Renew Europe Group coordinator in the Foreign Affairs Committee, added:

"I am deeply worried about the constitutional crisis in the Republic of Moldova. I urge all political actors in Moldova to uphold the rule of law, to refrain from actions that undermine it and to enter into a dialogue. Decisions of the Constitutional Court must be respected at all times. The EU supports President Maia Sandu in pursuing her reform agenda".
