European Parliament approved a tariff reduction deal with United States: an important step towards a positive Transatlantic agenda.
Renew Europe welcomes the adoption (by a very large majority) of the EU-US agreement to eliminate customs duties on certain European and American products. In the context of trade tensions between the EU and the US, this agreement sets a positive mark as the first tariff reduction agreement between the EU and the US in more than twenty years. Moreover, this agreement falls within WTO rules and rules-based trade, which is a priority for Renew Europe.
The Renew Europe Group is looking forward to finding new ways to overcome past tensions and to joining forces where common global challenges need to be handled. The US is our most important trading partner.
In this regard, it is crucial that the US returns to the Paris Agreement, as declared by President-elect Biden. Renew Europe remains strongly committed to the Paris Agreement and its role in trade agreements.
Renew Europe is convinced that a positive trading partnership will benefit citizens and businesses on both sides, and expects the new President of the US to join us in deepening our strategic relationship.
Liesje Schreinemacher, Renew Europe shadow rapporteur (VVD, Netherlands) on this file :
"This mini-deal presents a positive step towards greater cooperation between the EU and US. I call on the new Biden administration to join us in our ambitions and to start working together on global challenges that we are facing today."
