Cuban authorities must abide by their obligations laid down in the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement with the EU
The Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament condemns the increasing repression of Cuban authorities against any form of democratic expression, the absence of spaces for pluralistic political participation, the lack of judicial independence and free speech protections and calls on the EU to condemn it publicly as well.
In a resolution dealing with human rights and political situation in Cuba, today adopted in plenary, MEPs sound the alarm on the deteriorating situation in the country despite the adopted Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement.
Renew Europe MEP, Javier Nart (Independent, Spain), Vice-Chair of the Delegation for relations with the countries of Central America, who initiated the resolution, insisted on the strict compliance and obligations that Cuba must fulfill according to the PDCA:
“Cuba violates its obligations frontally. This resolution reveals the concrete facts of the very serious transgressions that Cuba is committing. And every violation has consequences, which are specified in the Agreement in Article 85 (3) (a). The Declaration of the Committee on International Relations of the National Assembly of People's Power is offensive and false. This Parliament does not obey any other agenda than its own, meaning the defence of democracy, human rights and strict compliance with the agreement.”
Renew Europe MEP, Dita Charanzová (ANO, Czech Republic), Vice-President of the European Parliament responsible for relations with Latin America, added:
“4 years of the EU-Cuba Agreement, and there are more political prisoners in Cuba and no inclusive dialogue. The Cuban people have been suffering for so long, and this Agreement was meant to improve their lives. But Cuba continues to violate the human rights obligations they signed up to, and the EU must step up to enforce these.
We repeat our call for the EU to convene a meeting of special urgency, as laid out in the PDCA, and should this not produce results, to suspend the Agreement.”
