Renew Europe calls for a new EU Strategy and Action Plan for Tourism
Today, the European Parliament voted on a resolution on transport and tourism in 2020 and beyond, giving its input on the non-legislative measures adopted by the European Commission on the 13th of May aiming at helping Member States gradually lift travel restrictions and allow tourism and transport businesses to reopen. Heavily affected by the COVID-19 outbreak, transport and tourism have a major impact on our European economy and the Renew Europe Group insisted on more concrete actions and financial support for the sector, including the establishment of a Crisis-Management Mechanism, in order to be able to respond not only to the current, but also to future challenges.
MEP José Ramón Bauzá (Ciudadanos, Spain), Renew Europe Group’s coordinator in TRAN Committee, who negotiated the resolution on behalf of our political Group, said:
“Today's Resolution is proof of the Renew Europe Group's commitment and leadership concerning the COVID-19 crisis response. Short-term and long-term support to the tourism and travel sector is necessary to ensure its survival and to move towards a genuine European tourism policy that can significantly contribute to enhancing the competitiveness and the prosperity of the sector. Therefore, we call on the Commission to adopt a new EU Strategy and Action Plan for Tourism based on a very close dialogue with the sector in order to maintain Europe’s standing as a leading destination through an ‘EU Tourism Brand’.”
